Key Terms

Here you'll find brief explanations of the most important terms you'll encounter on the platform and in the Austrian energy industry.

Consumption (Bezug)

Electricity drawn from the grid. This is the standard case for most households and businesses. This value appears as consumption on your electricity bill.

EDA

Energiewirtschaftlicher Datenaustausch — Austria's central network for exchanging smart meter data between grid operators, energy suppliers, and platforms like energiedaten.at. Your meter connection runs entirely through this network.

Feed-in (Einspeisung)

Electricity you feed into the grid — for example from a photovoltaic system, battery, or participation in an energy community. Feed-in has its own Zählpunkt number and is recorded separately from consumption.

L1 / L2 / L3

Data quality levels for meter readings:

  • L1 — Measured: The grid operator recorded the value directly at the meter.
  • L2 — Reliable estimate: The value has been substituted but is considered reliable.
  • L3 — Unreliable estimate: The value is an estimate with low reliability.

You can see the data quality on the detail page of your meter in the app.

Grid operator (Netzbetreiber)

The company that operates the electricity grid in your region. The grid operator stores your meter data and delivers it via the EDA network. The platform automatically identifies your grid operator from your Zählpunkt number.

OBIS code

A technical code that describes what a meter reading measures — for example whether it is consumption or feed-in, and whether it is a quarter-hourly value. OBIS codes appear when you retrieve raw meter data via the API.

QH / Quarter-hourly values

The 15-minute measurement interval is the standard for smart meter data in Austria. A day consists of 96 quarter-hourly values. The charts in the app display this resolution by default.

T-1

Your meter readings arrive with a one-day delay. This is due to the EDA network infrastructure: grid operators deliver the previous day's data daily. So today's data will be available tomorrow.

Zählpunkt / Zählpunkt number

The 33-character ID (starting with "AT") that uniquely identifies a metering point in the EDA network. You need this number to connect your smart meter. More details: The Zählpunkt number.

Consent (Zustimmung)

The authorisation you must confirm in your grid operator's online portal, allowing them to forward your meter readings to energiedaten.at. Without consent, no data flows. More details: The Consent Process.

OBIS code reference

Code Meaning
1-1:1.9.0 P.01 Active energy consumption (quarter-hourly values)
1-1:2.9.0 P.01 Active energy feed-in (quarter-hourly values)

Data quality and substitute values

Grid operators must replace L3 data: within 15 days for energy community allocations, and within 60 days for regular processes.
