Smart meter data from Austria: build your own connection or use energiedaten.at?

Your own connection to the Austrian energy market needs ongoing care: a release arrives twice a year, every grid operator has its special cases, and missing values have to be requested again. With energiedaten.at your customers’ smart meter data reaches your software, and we look after the connection.

For companies that bring smart meter data into their own offering. The requests run under your own market partner ID or, to get started, under ours.

What reaches your software

  • Electricity down to the quarter hour
  • Electricity from all Austrian grid operators
  • Gas at the resolution the grid operator delivers
  • Yesterday’s data, delivered today
  • Under your market partner ID or ours

Two paths to smart meter data in your system

On both paths the same data arrives in your software. The operation in between is handled either by you or by us.

  1. Grid operator

    EDA network

  2. Handled by energiedaten.at
    1. Endpoint (KEP)

      own server, updates, maintenance

    2. Market processes

      Data approvals, releases Apr./Oct.

    3. Data maintenance

      Re-request gaps, corrections

  3. Your offering

    Your software

You run the endpoint, market processes and data maintenance yourself. We take this over, and the integration into your software stays with you.

Communication endpoint Own connection Run the server, install updates, monitor queues and logs With energiedaten.at We run and maintain the endpoint, under your market partner ID too.
Data approvals Own connection Handle requests, responses and revocations per metering point With energiedaten.at You add the metering point, we handle request, response and revocation.
Grid operator particularities Own connection Detect and handle every variant With energiedaten.at We detect the variants and handle them in our connection.
Gaps and corrections Own connection Detect, re-request, incorporate With energiedaten.at We detect missing days, re-request them from the grid operator and incorporate replacement values.
Releases in April and October Own connection Implement, test, roll out by the deadline With energiedaten.at We implement the release, test it and switch over on the cut-off date.
Integration into your software Own connection With you With energiedaten.at With you, via our REST API, webhooks or files

From day-to-day operations

In 2021 the team behind energiedaten.at built its own connection for the SaaS solution of an international group in Austria and still operates it today, for several hundred metering points and with the Ponton X/P Messenger as a managed service. That experience is built into energiedaten.at.

Releases in April and October. Messages and processes in the EDA network change twice a year. EDA GmbH announces what is coming in its monthly "EDA Infrastruktur" meeting, and on the cut-off date our connection runs the new version. The meeting is held in German.

Grid operators answer differently. If you request data from before the current customer’s contract, for example, one grid operator rejects the request, another later reports "no metering point", and a third calls it invalid. New variants only show up in operation, and we build them into our connection.

Gaps and corrections. If a day is missing or the grid operator delivers only an estimate, your customer sees it in their analyses. The grid operator often sends the replacement only once it is re-requested. We take care of that.

You don’t measure weather data yourself either

Anyone who uses weather data in their software, for a PV forecast for instance, doesn’t put up their own weather stations. The data comes from a provider, and their developers work on the forecast. Smart meter data works the same way: your product stands out through what you make of the data. The time your developers spend on releases and grid operators’ special cases is missing from those features.

When your own connection is the better choice

Your own connection fits if

  • market communication itself is part of your product, for instance because you develop software for grid operators or energy suppliers
  • you already have staff for EDA processes

energiedaten.at fits if

  • you need the smart meter data for your own offering
  • your developers should work on the features of your product
  • you want to start with your first metering point, under your market partner ID or ours

Your customers’ data approvals stay with you

The market partner ID is the identifier your company uses to request data in the Austrian energy market. If the requests run under your market partner ID, your customer sees your company as the requesting market partner in their grid operator’s portal, and the data approvals stay with you, even if you change service provider or later connect yourself. You take your data with you.

No market partner ID of your own yet? Then start under ours, with the first metering point and without infrastructure of your own. There is a migration path for switching to your own later.

Already running your own connection?

Then switch to energiedaten.at, and we take over market processes, gaps, corrections and releases. If you want to keep the market processes yourself, you can also hand over only the operation of the Ponton X/P Messenger to us. In both cases the data approvals continue to run under your market partner ID.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

No. If the requests run under your market partner ID, you can switch to your own connection at any time. The data approvals remain valid, and you take your data with you.

Yes, there is a migration path for that. We’ll discuss with you what it looks like for your metering points.

The prices for starting under our market partner ID are on the pricing page. For your own market partner ID we prepare a custom quote for you after our conversation.

No. energiedaten.at does not cover managing the members, allocating the energy or billing an energy community.

Let’s clarify which path suits you

In the conversation we go through your metering points, your systems and your market partner ID. Or connect your first metering point right away and look at the values yourself.
